Learn more about RBC Insurance Canada.

Founded in 1864 in Halifax, N.S., The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) pre-dates Confederation. In 2016, it was Canada’s second-largest corporation by revenue, bringing in an estimated $42-billion. The bank has headquarters in Toronto and Montreal.

RBC Insurance Canada offers car insurance, as well as home, travel, and life insurance for individuals and groups.

Auto insurance from RBC is available in all provinces and territories except British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Its products are distributed by RBC Insurance Agency Ltd. and underwritten by Aviva General Insurance Company.

RBC has a sizable footprint in the Canadian auto insurance market, though it’s dwarfed by its health and life insurance products.

RBC Insurance offers car insurance quotes online through its site. LowestRates.ca offers car insurance quotes from 50+ Canadian insurance providers, so you can see which one offers the cheapest premium.

What other products does RBC Insurance offer?

Along with insuring all kinds of vehicles (cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, motorhomes, ATVs, trailers and collector and classic cars), RBC offers a wide selection of coverage options for individuals, businesses and groups.

Home insurance: Standard and optional coverage for owners of houses and condos, and tenant insurance for renters.

Seasonal, secondary and rental home insurance: Coverage for seasonal and secondary homes and properties rented out to others.

Travel insurance: Comprehensive packages covering emergency medical costs, baggage, trip cancellation and interruption and accidents, with tailored options for seniors and travel within Canada. Choose from multi-trip annual coverage or cover just one trip at a time. RBC also has à la carte travel insurance options for those who don’t need everything a package offers. Visitors to Canada can choose from three tiers of emergency medical and dental coverage as well.

Life insurance: A range of term, whole and universal life insurance options to fit different needs and budgets, with optional personal accident coverage also available.

Disability and critical illness insurance: Covers living expenses for you and your family if you can’t work because of an illness or injury. There’s also the option of adding hospital insurance if you’re an RBC customer, to fill gaps left by government and employer health insurance.

Loan insurance: Policies to cover your RBC debts, like credit cards, mortgages and loans or lines of credit. These coverage options can help top up employer-based disability, life and critical illness insurance or provide protection in case you lose your job.

Business insurance: Coverage for businesses including for the departure, sickness or injury of an owner or key employee. RBC also offers group auto, home, health, dental, disability and life insurance for organizations.

Discounts

Bundling your home and life insurance with your auto insurance could net you a discount. Getting a quote from RBC online could also qualify you for a 5% discount. Other ways to earn a discount with RBC include:

  • Insuring multiple vehicles with RBC.
  • Having no claims history.
  • Being a retiree.
  • Installing an RBC-approved anti-theft alarm system in your vehicle.
  • Installing winter tires on your car.

RBC employees receive significant discounts — up to 25% on car insurance and 10% on home insurance — and could qualify for more depending on eligibility.

Special programs

Unlike many of its car insurance competitors, RBC does not offer usage-based auto insurance, or any other optional programs that make it stand out on the innovation front. However, policyholders can still customize their policies by purchasing optional add-ons:

Family protection endorsement - If you or a member of your immediate family is injured or killed by an uninsured, underinsured, or unidentified at-fault driver, the benefit you receive will be significant — up to the limits of your financial coverage, according to the company.

Waiver of depreciation endorsement - If your new car is lost or damaged within the first two years, RBC will give you a benefit based on the sales price and won’t factor in depreciation.

Forgiveness for the first at-fault accident - Your premium won’t increase after your first accident with this rider.

Is there an app?

RBC Insurance does not currently offer an app for car insurance. It does, however, offer an online portal for policyholders. After you purchase car insurance with RBC Insurance, you’ll get a login for RBC’s Online Insurance hub, where you can manage your policy or file a claim.

How to submit a claim with RBC

There are two ways to contact RBC insurance about your car insurance policy: online, through RBC’s Online Insurance portal or by phone.
